Microbial populations in subseafloor sediments rely primarily on buried organic matter derived from photosynthetic surface environments. The abundance of organic carbon and the availability of different electron acceptors strongly affect the compositions of subseafloor microbial communities. Here, we performed metagenome analysis of microbial communities in subseafloor sediments off Shimokita Peninsula, Japan.
